Love has its ups and downs and throughout these poems it is expressed in such a
way. Love is so satisfying, but you have to put the work in. In the poem ‘The Beginning
of the Song that Diverts the Heart’, the narrator expresses her desire for the boy and
wanting to release it in a sexual form. “My heart desires you, let us release it together”.
She wants them to have a sexual connection. What i found most interesting about these
poems is the reference of “brother” and sister”.The translations state that they
are frequent terms of affection used in egyptian love songs. “The terms imply intimacy,
not consanguinity”. In the poem ‘I Wish I was her Nubian maid’ the boy expresses his
desire to see the girl naked. He has a fantasy of her. He wants to serve her hand and foot,
while in return recieving pleasure from her. He says “she would grant me the hue of her
whole body”. The poems seem to be very graphic and sexual. In the poem ‘Seven whole
days’ the boy says “If I see her, I’ll become healthy”. The boy will be so satisfied by her
presence, that he believes it will make his health better. Throughout these poems both the
boy and girl have desires and wishes to be satisfied.

The Egyptian love poems appears to be about lust and the manner in which men
and women expressed their feelings for each other romantically. The narrators use simple
dialogue, metaphors and ironies to describe and express their emotions, they are also
depicted as being romantic. The narrators appear to be yearning for the return of their
lovers. They have used nature and events from their daily activities to talk about love and
create an imagery, so readers can experience their emotions; for example,” The river
surrounds my body.” In response to the question of how much of their interest resides in
the love object and how much in the community of their peers; their interest seems to
reside in the love object more than in the community of their peers. They did not seem to
consider virginity vital for marriage; therefore, they consider sex a social activity between
two people who were attracted to each other, and premarital sex was acceptable; for
instance, they address their peers as “brothers and sisters, which imply intimacy, and not
consanguinity.” However, once they were married they were expected to remain faithful
to each other. On the other hand, their peers of other communities or culture may consider
marriage before sex very vital. There is a fresh modern quality of these lyrics because
emotion in the modern world haven’t changed from those of earlier centuries; therefore,
readers of the modern world can easily relate emotionally to the lyrics of the songs.
According to the narrator, “Egyptian love poetry shows striking parallels with love poetry
of other Near Eastern traditions” (“Egyptian Love Poems”)
