Research Design
The goal of this summative assignment is to create the Research Design,
which will become the final research and analysis paper for the Homeland
Security Capstone Course. Review the Capstone Research Project.
This Research Design will collectively build throughout the course
and encapsulate most of the research principles addressed in this
course. The Research Design should be between eight to ten pages in
length and address the items listed below. Remember, the goal of the
research design is to establish the research plan and the method by
which research will be accomplished in order to produce the final
research and analysis report which will be due in the Capstone Course
for the Homeland Security and Emergency Management program.
Focus of the Final Paper:
Use the following structure and address all elements of this design template:
Explain a key issue in Homeland Security and Emergency Management and develop a supporting research question.
There should be only one research question that you are trying to answer. (½ page)
Construct at least two hypotheses that you will research and
analyze in an attempt to answer you research question. Explain the logic
for the generation of your hypotheses. (1 page)Identify research variables that you will use to evaluate your
hypotheses and show how they will be measured. (1-2 pages) Identify the
method you will use to analyze your variables and what techniques you
will use to verify that your data is valid and representative of the
population or theory you are examining.Conduct a literature review related to your homeland security
research question and your hypotheses. Discuss the findings of this
literature review. (1-2 pages) Create a reference page that accounts for all sources you
identified relating to your research topic. Your literature review must
have no less than 8 fully documented resources.Describe the research method by which you will gather the data
to evaluate the research question. Identify the quantitative and
qualitative methods you will use to collect the data on your variables.
For example, will you conduct a survey, use existing statistics, or
create a focus group? (1 page)Finally, describe where you believe the greatest challenge will
be in conducting research and analysis on your homeland security topic.
The complete assignment should be eight to ten double-spaced pages in
length (excluding the APA title and reference pages) and be in the
format of a research design. Refer to Chapters 22 and 23 of the course
text for additional information on the creation of research designs.
Students must use at least eight sources other than the course
textbook when developing their research and analysis. At least five of
these sources must be located via the Ashford University Library. In
addition to the research design, students must include a reference page,
which complements their literature review. Each item of the reference
page should be in APA format and include where the reference was
located.
Writing
Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length (excluding
the APA title and reference pages), and formatted according to APA style.Must include a title page with the following:
Title of paperStudent’s nameCourse name and numberInstructor’s nameDate submitted
Must begin with an introductory paragraph that has a succinct thesis statement.Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.Must end with a conclusion that reaffirms your thesis.Must use at least eight scholarly sourcesMust document all sources in APA style, as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style.Capstone Research Project
This summative assignment represents the Capstone Project of the entire Homeland Security and Emergency Management
degree program. For this assignment, conduct research on a Homeland Security and Emergency Management topic
utilizing the steps of the scientific method. This assignment will have incremental assignments to submit during Week
One and Week Two of this course in order to ensure that you are progressing in proper research methodology and scope.
The research question and hypothesis approval is due in Week One and a literature review will be due in Week Two.
These assignments support the project, but they are graded separately and retain their own values separate from the
Capstone research Project.
Conduct an original research project in one of the following topic areas. For reference purposes and review, these key
homeland security areas and sub-disciplines can be reviewed at the U. S. Department of Homeland Security website.
Topics
Counterterrorism activities and programs in aviation security or law enforcement (See Department of Homeland
Security | Counterterrorism)
Border security activities and programs in protecting America (See Department of Homeland Security | Border
Security)
Preparedness, response and recovery activities and programs in disaster response or disaster recovery (See
Department of Homeland Security | Preparedness, Response & Recovery)
Immigration activities and programs in immigration enforcement (See Department of Homeland Security |
Immigration)
Homeland security activities and programs in cybersecurity and privacy protection (See Department of Homeland
Security | Cybersecurity)
Once a topic area has been selected, formulate a research question and supporting hypotheses for approval by the
instructor at the conclusion of Week One.
Use your approved research questions and hypotheses to develop research variables and a literature review for submission
during Week Two.
During Week Three, Four and Five, conduct research and write a research paper that is between eight to ten pages in
length and includes the following basic structure.
Identify a key issue and supporting research question in Homeland Security and Emergency Management. (1
page)
Create one research hypothesis that may answer the research question. You may use one that you formulated for
Week One assignment, “Research Project Prep.” (1 page)
Establish research variables for analysis and subsequent confirmation or refute of the research hypothesis.
(roughly 1-2 pages)
Present results of research, informing the proposed research variables. This research must be supported by at
least eight legitimate academic resources, five of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library. The
course textbook will not be considered for the resources requirement. (2 to 3 pages)
Analyze the research question and supporting hypothesis. (1-2 pages)
Construct a conclusion of research (results and answer of the research). (1-2 pages)
Include a reference page, which does not count towards the summative assignments page total. The reference page
should be as long as needed to accurately account for all utilized research materials. Each item of the reference
page should be in APA (6th edition) format and include where the reference was located (i.e., Ashford Online
Library, Internet, etc.).
The Capstone Research Project must be at least eight pages in length. You must use at least eight scholarly resources,
other than the course textbook, to support your thesis. At least five of these resources must come from the Ashford
Online Library. All sources must be properly cited in text as well as on the reference page. The Capstone Research
Project must be formatted according to APA (6th edition) style. If you would like to refer to APA samples and tutorials,
log into the Ashford Writing Center (USER NAME: ashford; PASSWORD: student). Click on the “ENG122 Resources”
