Re:
Cross-cultural Communications Research and Reporting Memo
Dear GBS Interns:
We are planning to conduct a
seminar to inform our global constituents about cross-cultural communications
in the workplace, and we’d like your help with identifying similarities and
differences between international countries and our own. Please response to
this request by writing an effective Interoffice Memo. In your memo, please
include the following:
1. Select an international
country.
2. Perform research
(see recommended topics, below).
3. In one to three
(1-3) sentences, compare and contrast the similarities and differences with
respect to cross-cultural communications while conducting business in your
international environment and the U.S.
4. Any time we derive
information from research, it needs to be cited. So, be sure to cite your
sources in-text and in an end reference citation. If you are taking words
from the original author (source), verbatim, surround the research with
quotation marks to indicate a direct quote.
Create an
effective Interoffice Memo response TO: The GBC Executive Team.
Recommended areas to research may
include, but are not limited to:
1.
Time orientation
2.
Space
3.
Observation of silence
4.
Formality
5.
Tolerance
6.
Saving face
7.
Protocol for exchanging business cards
8.
Women in the workplace
9.
Views on and practices about corruption
10.
Non-verbal communications
Example of Research
Format:
While similarity exists in that
both cultures value business meetings, the proximity of space that occurs
during meetings between one person and another is oriented differently
in the United States than in Arab cultures. In the United States,
business meetings are considered a “social or public environment” (Guffy, 2008,
p. 105) in which most people prefer standing about “two feet” (Lesikar, Flatley
& Rentz, 2008, p. 456) from one another. By contrast, in the Arab
countries, people tend to stand more closely, even “nose to nose” (p. 490)
during a business meeting.
Thank you,
Kelly Sinclair
